Tal Chappar Blackbuck Wildlife Sanctuary

HOME OF THE BLACKBUCK

Located in the Churu district of Northwestern Rajasthan, India. It is known for blackbucks, the only living species in the genus Antilope. Blackbucks live in herds. These herds can be very large, with as much as 50 animals, or smaller (10-30), with just does and a single male. Sometimes, younger males stay with the does, but older males might chase them away. These young males may then form their own small herds.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

Male blackbucks are dark brown, black, and white and have long, twisted horns, while females are fawn-coloured with no horns.

INDIAN DESERT FOX

The Indian desert Fox or the White-footed Fox (Vulpes vulpes pusilla)  is a subspecies of the red fox found in the desert landscapes of Rajasthan and Gujarat. The Red Fox has about 45 subspecies and a presence in around 83 countries. In the Wildlife Protection Act (1972), the desert fox is a schedule-I species, equivalent to the tiger.

BEHAVIOUR

The white-footed fox is known for its agile hunting behaviour, complex dens for breeding, and a diet primarily consisting of rodents and gerbils. They stalk or dig out their prey. In Tal Chhapar, they have been observed to stalk spiny tailed lizard.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

The Indian desert Fox can also feed on desert vegetation for survival. In fact, they often raid desert crops like melons, fruits and berries.

APPEARANCE

​Demoiselles Cranes have a feathered head with a white-feathered line that extends from the corner of their red eye, to the back of their head.

After hatching, demoiselle chicks are silver gray, and as they develop into a juvenile demoiselle, they become predominately grey at the time of fledging. This color assists in camouflaging the bird.

BEHAVIOUR

During display, the demoiselles can elongate the feathers on the sides of their head.
